How we choose gifts

The rules we hold ourselves to when a product goes into a guide — and the ones that keep it out.

Last updated

One reader per guide

Every guide is written for one kind of recipient: an age, a relationship, a life event, an occasion or a budget. Before any product is considered we write down what tends to work for that reader, what usually misses, and what to avoid. Those notes appear on the guide, and a product only makes the list if it fits them.

What gets a product in

  • It suits the reader, not just the category. A good toy is not automatically a good gift for a ten-year-old. We ask whether it will still be used a month later, whether it needs an adult, and whether it says something about the person giving it.
  • We can explain the choice in a sentence. Each pick has a reason written for this guide. The same product in two guides gets two different reasons, because it is there for two different people. If we cannot write the sentence, the product does not go in.
  • Drawbacks are stated. Where a product needs batteries, has small parts, runs small, is loud or takes up a lot of space, we say so in a “good to know” note rather than leaving it for you to discover.
  • It is in stock at a retailer we link to when the guide is written or reviewed, at a price that fits the budget band shown on the pick.

What keeps a product out

  • Products we cannot describe honestly from information we actually have.
  • Products chosen because of a higher commission, a free sample or a request from a brand.
  • Anything that looks unsafe for the age it would be given to, or that has an open recall we know about.
  • Novelty items that get a laugh once and nothing after.
  • Padding. A guide with six good picks is published with six picks, not fifteen.

Independence from commissions

GiftWiseList earns affiliate commissions when readers buy through our links. Commission rates play no part in which products are chosen, how they are ordered or how they are described. We do not accept payment for placement, do not publish sponsored guides and do not take free products in exchange for coverage. The full arrangement is set out in the affiliate disclosure.

What we claim, and what we don’t

  • We do not say we have tested, tried or reviewed a product unless a person on the team genuinely has, and the guide says so in plain words.
  • We do not invent specifications, awards, ratings or quotes. If a detail matters and we are not sure of it, we leave it out and point you to the retailer’s listing.
  • We do not print prices. Each pick shows a broad budget band chosen by the editor when the product was added, and the button says “Check price” because the retailer is the only reliable source.
  • We do not host user reviews or star ratings, and we do not copy manufacturer marketing copy. Descriptions are written by us.

People and tools

Every product on the site was chosen by a person, and every reason and note was written or approved by a person before publishing. We sometimes use software, including AI writing tools, to help tidy wording from notes we have written ourselves. Those tools are never used to choose products, to invent facts about them or to publish anything unreviewed. Product images, where shown, are ones we have the right to use; we do not copy retailer images.

Review dates and updates

Each guide shows the date it was last reviewed. A review means the guide as a whole was read through and its picks were checked as still available and still sensible; it does not mean every product was re-inspected that day. Seasonal guides are reviewed before their season. Products that are discontinued or that we no longer stand behind are removed rather than left in place.

Corrections

If a guide contains an error, a broken link, a product that is no longer sold, or advice you think is wrong, write to us. Factual mistakes are corrected as soon as they are confirmed and the guide’s reviewed date is updated. We do not quietly rewrite a guide to change what it recommended in the past without updating that date.

Suggesting a product

Readers and makers are welcome to suggest products. Suggestions are judged by the same rules as anything else, and a suggestion never guarantees inclusion or a reply. Offers of payment, samples or “partnership” in return for a listing are declined.
